Brisbane and Queensland Infrastructure set for future growth
When you look at all levels of government in Australian states
and territories, as well as the private sector, Queensland has, by
far, the highest total expenditure on roads. Add to this the
highest projected growth in urban public transport from 2011 to
2031, and you have a state that is set for growth.
Approximately $7.86 billion per annum has been spent on the
construction of roads in Queensland. NSW comes in second with $5.17
billion, followed by Victoria at $2.65 billion. The state/territory
with the lowest is the Australian Capital Territory, at $207
million.
Brisbane itself has a total budget for infrastructure of $2.6
billion for 2015-16, with nearly $309 million assigned to roads and
bikeways, $100 million of which is committed to the Smoother
Suburban Streets program, and the majority of the remainder for
additional lanes and new infrastructure to boost an already booming
transport, bypass and road system.
Brisbane has also invested in urban rail and a Bus Rapid Transit
system that is recognised as world class. Funded by both state and
local government, this has resulted in a doubling of bus passengers
in the last 11 years. If it were not for the South East Busway, an
additional seven and a half lanes of highway would be needed!
With a long-term commitment to infrastructure delivery, the
Queensland Infrastructure Plan identifies approximately $134
billion worth of infrastructure investment for Brisbane and the
surrounding region. Designed to manage ongoing growth, this vital
infrastructure program represents the largest public infrastructure
spending initiative in Australian history.
